Applegate, in the heart of the Berkshires, was built in
the grand era of the 1920's by a New York surgeon for use as a summer
estate. It is set on a park-like 6 acre country estate one half mile from
the historic town of Lee and about 3 miles from Stockbridge.
Once inside the iron gate, the circular drive gives you
the first views of Applegate's sweeping manicured lawns and towering
trees. The huge fragrant lilac bushes line the driveway and serve to
separate the lawns into deliberate garden areas. The rose gardens,
perennial beds, fruit orchard and vegetable garden provide interest all
year. As you rest in one of the several large hammocks you might get a
glimpse of "Gloria's Secret Garden". It invites you to walk in this shade
garden or to stop to read on a stone bench. Each season offers you a
wonderful view of nature in an estate setting. At the end of the drive,
you arrive at a dramatic two story port-cochere of the Georgian Colonial
The entryway is a spacious foyer furnished with plush
carpets, a grandfather clock and other fine antiques. To one side of the
foyer is the formal living room with several sitting areas, large
fireplace and baby grand piano. This is the setting for the popular
nightly wine and cheese reception. Adjacent to the living room is the less
formal sun parlor divided into TV and game areas. On the other side of the
foyer is the dining room. It is set for the full gourmet breakfast with a
variety of tables to serve from 2 to 6 or more people.
Breakfast consists of freshly squeezed juice, a fruit
course, cereal, granola, yogurt, a special hot entree of the day, baked
muffins and breads, coffee and teas. On Sundays, a grand buffet encourages
guests to linger over the newspapers. From the central foyer a curved
staircase leads upstairs to five uniquely decorated queen bedded rooms and
three luxurious king bedded suites.
